Can You Mine Dunes and Break Limestone in Sandustry?

The desert looks like an unfinished puzzle because tooltips show terrain health and promotional imagery may suggest future interactions. This page distinguishes current official material behavior from community expectations about later content; it does not claim a hidden room, secret coordinate or unreleased Tier 8 tool.

Identify the three different problems

Dune is a reforming desert terrain, Limestone is an impervious structure material, and the large desert boundary is a current content limit. Treating all three as ordinary mineable Sand creates the false impression that a launcher, stronger weapon or special angle is malfunctioning.

Hover the material and name what you are testing before changing tools. This single observation prevents hours of repeating the wrong experiment.

What happens when you dig Dune

The official Dune page says ordinary digging tools damage it and release Sunsand. That Sunsand quickly returns to Dune. You may briefly see loose material, but the stable state is terrain again.

Because the reformation is the documented mechanic, a conveyor or launcher is not guaranteed to capture a permanent stream. Do not design a critical factory input around the fraction you can momentarily disturb.

Why Dune appears impossible to transport

Conveyors and launchers move supported material types; the reformed Dune is terrain rather than an ordinary loose solid. A player can observe a brief Sunsand state and then see an immovable Dune, which looks like inconsistent logistics but matches the official reformation description.

If you are testing, isolate a tiny patch away from vital machinery and watch the material name. This is an observation exercise, not a recommended production chain.

Why Limestone does not break

The official Limestone page says it appears in mysterious desert structures and is impervious to all known tools. Its displayed health does not mean a current weapon can reduce it. Community players report trying Laser, Void Gun, rockets and the normal Gun without opening the pyramid.

Stop escalating tool use when the material remains Limestone. Save the location for a future update instead of assuming your progression is softlocked.

Recognize the current Early Access boundary

Players reaching the current Tier 7 end message report that bigger systems and secrets beneath the dunes are planned for later updates. That supports an unreleased-content interpretation, but the community discussion is not a release-date promise.

This page therefore does not tell you to search for a hidden Tier 8 unlock. Check official patch notes after updates and re-test only when a change explicitly mentions desert content or these materials.

What you can do in the desert now

Explore accessible passages, mark the pyramid and Dune edge on your map, collect reachable materials and complete current artifact and production objectives elsewhere. Keep factories away from reforming terrain if its behavior interferes with a clean logistics boundary.

Take a screenshot of the material tooltip and current version if behavior differs. That produces a useful bug report without claiming that expected current limits are a bug.

Avoid wasting tools, saves and factory time

Do not repeatedly unload explosives, leave weapons firing at Limestone, or route essential launchers through Dune merely because an old image suggests another behavior. Promotional, demo or future footage cannot establish the current Early Access mechanic.

Return after a documented patch. Until then, Limestone is a stop sign and Dune is a reforming terrain experiment, not a missing puzzle solution.
